82nd Airborne Welcome

Welcome to the Home of the 82nd Airborne Division Tactical Realism Clan

We are known in the gaming world as a Tactical Realism clan. We play every game using tactics and strategy to achieve victory. If you are not familiar with our server rules, you are encouraged to read them by clicking the Rules link on our main menu. Remember, if you cannot do it in real life combat then do not do it on our server.

All Servers, Teamspeak, and Download information can be found to the left under Public Links. We use Teamspeak (VoIP) to work as a team and converse with friends. You can see who is currently on the 82ndAB TeamSpeak by viewing the TeamSpeak block on the right. Everyone is welcome to join our TeamSpeak server and be a part of the 82nd experience.

Please also notice our FAQ under the Information Links on the left of the site, it is designed to help us manage the website, servers, questions or any other problems specific to the 82nd Airborne Divsion. It is open to our registered users for viewing and requesting of FAQ's.

If you wish to join the 82nd Airborne, you are more than welcome to fill out an application by clicking the Enlistment link on the left under requests. Please be patient after applying, for our acceptance process is a long and tedious one.

All in all, we are all just gamers here looking to have a good time...

PART 1:

July 9, 1943 would be the day in which the 82nd Airborne Division had trained so long and hard. They had been chosen to spearhead the invasion of Sicily, codenamed "HUSKY". The 1st, 3rd, and 45th Infantry Divisions, with attached units, would land on the south coast part of the island in the area of Licata, Gela, and Scoglitti while British and Canadian forces would land on the east. The 82nd was to drop inland at Gela to clear a path for the 1st Infantry Division. The 505th was chosen by General Ridgeway to make the initial assault with the 3rd Bn, 504th attached. In the days prior the D-Day many preperations were being made for the upcoming invasion. The 505th was airlifted to their designated airfields in the area of Kairouan in French Tunisia where they were closer to the Mediterranean Sea. They pitched tents in the olive orchards enjoying the shade and cool afternoon breezes coming in from the sea. On June 6th, the 505th would take time out from their preperations and briefings to celebrate the Regiments first birthday. Steers were barbequed and kegs of beer were on hand for the celebration. Colonel Gavin chose this time to give a speech to his boys about the tough training they had gone through and what he expected from them in the upcoming mission.

As noted in the Regimental History following his talk, "there wasn't a 505er who wouldn't follow him through Hell if he so ordered it and they would have the Colors flying over Satans C.P. hours ahead of schedule". Quote from: READY, A World War II History of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Shortly after 9 pm the Combat Team was in the air heading for their first checkpoint, the small island of Linosa. Near gale force winds had formed earlier that day and presented numerous navigational problems for the pilots. Since landmarks were scarce they intended to go by compass readings, headings and elapsed times but with the high tail winds the time schedule was thrown off. With the first island being so small, it was missed. As the second island Malta came into view, they mistakenly thought it was Linosa. However, due to the professionalism of the pilots, they realized their mishap and circled around to get on the correct course. Still, more problems would be faced by the pilots. Once over land the pre-invasion bombings and wind had kicked up a lot of dust making landmarks difficult to spot. Further more, courses were being thrown off due to evasive action being taken due to anti-aircraft and small arms fire. Because of all these problems the pilots were encountering, the serial formation suffered heavily and the Combat Team was dropped scattering them over 65 miles with only a few planes dropping the paratroopers within a few miles of their drop zones.

Three planes returned to Africa without giving the green light to jump. The pilots stepped forward and took the blame. Having barely enough gas to make it back and not finding the correct drop zones, they felt it would be better to return to base and give them a chance to jump another day. The troopers would get their opportunity to jump.... on D+1.

to be continued...

The months of May and June 1943, would be spent training in an area hand picked by the 82nd AB Commander, Genearl Matthew B. Ridgeway. It was the worst environment for training the troops, and that's why General Ridgeway picked it. The land was hard and rocky with dust blowing hot winds to make for the harshest elements imaginable.

After the injuries suffered by the demonstration jump for General Eisenhower and other dignitaries, as mentioned in the previous months history, replacements were brought in for those who would have lengthy recovery times and for the ones who wouldn't be returning at all. One of the troopers I have spoken with was originally assigned to the 101st AB, 2/501 PIR. The 82nd had pulled his Battalion to make the trip overseas with the All American Division for replacement purposes and were known as EGB's. When I asked him what EGB meant, he laughed and said, "We were Easy Goin' Bastards". Experiments were being made with jump loads of heavier equipment. It was decided that equipment such as mortars, larger machine guns, etc, would be dropped in seperate bundles to prevent more injuries. The paratroops were already jumping with loads weighing between 100 to 120 pounds. They also experimented with pushing a donkey, supplied with a cargo chute, out of a C47 in hopes that upon a successful landing the donkey could be used for transporation and hauling equipment. As you can imagine, the idea didn't work out too well when implimented and the plan was abandoned.

Most of what was learned during these months such as equipment loads, Troop Carrier formations and the like, would become Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all U.S. airborne units. By the end of June the troopers were ready for anything. Their confidence was high and they were ready for anything the axis forces could throw at them. The time to prove themselves was soon approaching for these young men. All eyes would be upon them to prove that this new idea of a massive airborne assault could work.

If you are getting kicked after either, downloading a new map from the cod4 server or just trying to join.

We have found a solution:

1) Close down your COD4 Game.

2) Delete the 82ndab folder in your Mods directory where you installed cod4.

3) Delete the usermaps folder in your cod4 install directory.

4) Load COD4 and Join the COD4 Server, you will have to redownload the Mod, but it should only take about 2 minutes.

for more information on this error please go to this forum thread.
